THE LAST NINE DAYS OF SCHOOL
TUESDAY, MAY 26. 2020
Hello Everyone! I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend.
We are in the last days of the Fourth Grade. Who would have guessed it would be through Home Learning?
Thanks to all who returned their two packets. The deadline has passed, so I am not receiving any more. I have completed the Student Summaries for the Cumulative Folders. I will be at school the next two Wednesdays to finish with closing out the school year--completing reports, documenting student/parent communication, attending meetings, etc. Only a certain number of people can be in the building at any one time.
I mailed each student a letter with the last 9-day activity guide. Each day you have the choice of completing one of the activities for that day. Those with little or no internet access will have to do the written activity for that day. Those with internet access have the choice of completing either activity.
Report Cards will be mailed to you. Summer packets are being created to keep the students engaged in learning for the summer. We don't want them to forget what they have learned! The 9-day Activities and Summer packet are due August 17th, the first day of school next year.
We will continue Class Meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for the next 2 weeks. I have been taking attendance.
A copy of the memo and 9-day activities are listed under the tab above "9-Day Activities".

Monday, May 11, 2020
Good Morning! I hope you had a restful weekend!
I have checked iReady Diagnostic test status to see who has and who has NOT completed the test.
Let me repeat that completing these two tests are very important. I know you may think I am saying this to urge and motivate you to take the tests. But I am not.
These results WILL BE used to determine if you have learned enough to be promoted to the 5th grade. The assignments in the packets will be used to determine if you have been working on and trying to learn the 4th grade skills. I will say again that these days you have been Home Learning ARE school days. You are EXPECTED to try. I know it may be hard, but I have done everything possible to help you. I have cut down each day's assignments. I post them to the class website, which I have told you and your parents about several times. There are teaching lessons for the Math lessons. We have student meetings 3 times a week. You have my cell phone number to call, and I can help you that way.
The assignments/lessons are created so your parents do not have to teach you. You HAVE the tools you need to do this by yourself!!
As 4th graders, you should be responsible enough to at least try. That is all I have asked of you this whole year. My motto has been and will continue to be, "Trying goes a long way" and "I only asked that you do your best."
iReady Reading
GOOD JOB goes to the 7 students who completed the test!!!
I am disappointed to say that 5 students have NOT even started and 2 students started, but did NOT finish!
iReady Math
GOOD JOB goes to the 6 students who completed the test!!!!
Thumbs down to the 6 students who have NOT started and 2 students who started, but did NOT finish!
AR Tests
I also checked to see who has been reading and taking AR tests since March 13, 2020 (the last day we were in school). This is the 34 Home Learning Days.
A BIG SHOUT-OUT to:
Morgan Lunsford - 25.2 points in the last 34 days
Jordon Freeman - 10 points in the last 34 days
Bryson Taylor - 5.5 points in the last 34 days.
Jac'Kayli Richardson - 5.3 points in the last 34 days.
That means 10 students have less than 5 points. Of these, 5 students have LESS than 1 point.
You can do better!!
(NOTE: The results for iReady and AR do not count students who have NO access to a laptop/computer and internet access.)
Assignments:
Math: iReady
Finish the iReady Diagnostic test.
If you have finished, go on iReady for 30 minutes.
Reading: iReady
Finish the iReady Diagnostic test.
If you have finished the test, go on iReady for 30 minutes.
Science: Week 2, Activity 7
Assignment: Read the handout on Animal Survival.

We have a Class Meeting tomorrow at 11:00 AM.

Monday, April 27, 2020
Good Morning everyone! I hope you had a safe, great weekend!
I'm sure you all know the schools are closed for the rest of the year, and we will continue with our Home Learning. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: This is not a vacation. You are being counted present to continue your learning at home for the 4th grade. WHAT YOU DO AT HOME COUNTS! It will be taken into account along with your report card, iReady Reading and Math data, AR data, last year's EOG results, and the Reading and Math portfolios (your graded work throughout the year) I have on you.
That means that those of you who did not turn in Packet # 1 needs to drop it off at school. Mrs. Mizelle is at school 2 1/2 days a week. I will know what days after the staff meeting tomorrow.
When Packet # 2 is due, it MUST be brought to school.
If we do not receive any packets, that will be a Fail. It counts against whether or not you pass to the 5th grade. We will also be looking at what you are doing on iReady Reading and Math AND your AR points while you are out of school.
______________________________________________________________________
I have been looking at iReady and Accelerated Reading.
ONLY 3 STUDENTS ARE WORKING WEEKLY ON IREADY!
____________________________________________________

Thursday, April 23rd
What a great class meeting! If you missed it, you have a chance tomorrow. I saw and talked with Jordon, Jada, and Jac'Kayli. They're having a great time with family, doing their daily lessons, and can't wait to come back to school. I can't either. We will find out today if the Governor is going to reopen schools. I hope so! I miss you guys!
But, since we are still learning-at-home, here are today's assignments.
Math - Today, you are going to learn about classifying triangles by their angles. Remember, a triangle is a 3-sided figure made up of 3 lines and 3 angles. (Tri- means 3.)
Triangles are classified 2 ways-1) by the length of the sides and 2) by the degree of the angles.
Watch the teaching video for Lesson 6. It will explain.
Then read Lesson 9-5 pages "Triangles".
Next complete the problems on that page. (You can write the answers on that sheet or use notebook paper.)
Reading - We are still on Sequence of Events. This is a skill that usually gives 4th graders trouble. That's why we are doing a LOT of practice putting things in order. It takes going back and rereading if you need to and using your brain and thinking.
Today, I want you to complete the last 2 worksheets from Lesson 5 Reading, "Cause and Effect" and "Now I Understand."
Don't forget to read 20 minutes!
Social Studies - There are two things to do in Social Studies today.
1) Go to the Time Magazine link in Week 2, Activity 1. Follow the directions (in the Packet 2) on how to get to the March 27, 2020 edition. Read the magazine. (You may use this for your 20 minutes of reading).
2) On a sheet of paper, complete assignment c under Week 2, Activity 1. Write a summary of the article "Comic Craze" pages 3-4. Your writing should tell me what the article is about using only main ideas and important details. It should be at least 5-6 complete sentences.
That's it for today! Don't forget Virtual Class today at 11:00. Go to Virtual Class Meeting tab at the top. You will log on the same way you did yesterday. Just follow the directions. See you then!

Now, today's assignments:
Math - In your packet, you have a Schoolnet that says “Use for assignments in Lessons 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9”. Complete questions # 41-60.
Then, go to iReady Math for 30 minutes.
Reading - I want you to complete one activity in Sequence of Events. Please complete Caption Capers (2 pages). Look at the bottom of 2nd page for the answers to the the questions.
Then, go to iReady Reading for 30 minutes.
Don't forget to read 30 minutes!
Science - Watch the video on Plant Growth on BrainPop. If it will let you, click on the vocabulary, games, challenge, and quiz on the site.
Social Studies - You can skip Social Studies today! You can save reading the "Time for Kids' magazine for tomorrow.
DON'T FORGET TO COME SEE ME IN THE VIRTUAL CLASS
TOMORROW!
Text your friends and remind them!

Tuesday, April 21st
Math - We are going to name, label and identify lines and line segments. It is very important that you look at the teaching lesson (Math-Lesson 5-#1).
Once you complete this, complete the worksheets "What's Buzzing and "Angles on a Clock Face" You DO NOT have to complete # 3 under Math Lesson 5. We will complete that tomorrow.
Reading - We are on Lesson 5 in Reading. This is practice in Sequence of Events or putting things in order. Think about the steps or your routine for getting ready for school. You follow a sequence. (You don't put your shoes on before you put your socks on do you?) There is no video to watch today.
I do not want you to complete all 5 worksheets today. Your assignment is to complete the 1st two-"Sweeter Than Honey" and "Traveling with the Corps".
Don't forget to read 20 minutes!
Social Studies - I hope you at least read North Carolina Weekly-Week 18 yesterday. If you watched the transportation video and visited the NC Department of Transportation, you hopefully know a lot more about how we get around. Without those dreamers who created trains, planes, boats, and all the other ways of getting around, we would be walking everywhere! Ugh!
Your assignment for today is to complete the crossword on the back page. Go back and underline where you found the answer!!
Science - We have completed the lessons on Photosynthesis. Now we are moving on to seed plants. Not all plants grow from seeds.
Your assignment today is to watch the BrainPop video on seed plants. Click on the different activities to learn more about seed plants--the vocabulary, challenge, quiz, or any of the boxes.
That's it for today! Don't forget our class meeting at 11:00 on Google Hangouts. The link and meeting password is under the Google Hangout tab (above). See you in virtual class later!!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Monday, April 20th -
I hope you had a great weekend! It's Monday once again and time to return to virtual class.
Math - Today we will learn about right, acute, and obtuse angles. You identify what kind of angle it is by the degree of the angle. In Lesson 4, click on the teaching lesson to see what I'm talking about. Then click the link to hear the Angles Song.
In your packet, you will find Envision Lesson 9-2 (pages 198-199). Read it carefully. It reviews what you saw in the teaching lesson. Answer the questions on pages 198-199.
Once you finish, go on iReady Math for 30 minutes.
Reading - This is the last lesson in Cause and Effect. You should be able to identify a cause and an effect in a reading passage by now.
Your assignment is to complete pages 42-46 in the Reading Competitive Edge workbook.
Once finished, go on iReady Reading for 30 minutes.
Read 20 minutes and take an AR test when you finish the book.
Social Studies - Click on this link https://www.ncpedia.org/transportation/history to read about the history of transportation in North Carolina. Then if you click on https://www.ncdot.gov/Pages/default.aspx it will take you to the NC Department of Transportation website. Look around the site and click on topics that interest you.
Last, read North Carolina Weekly (Week 18). You can complete the crossword puzzle tomorrow.
Science - If you did not finish Activity 3 under Week 1 Science, finish this. It included watching a video on photosynthesis on BrainPop and completing 2 worksheets-"Leafy Green Food Factories" and "Computer Chaos". If you have already completed this lesson, then you have NO Science today!! Hurrah!!
As always, call or text me with any problems.
We will be meeting tomorrow in a virtual meeting at 11:00 AM. Click on the tab "Google Hangouts" above to join the class.
I'll post tomorrow's assignments first thing in the morning and see you at 11:00 in class! I can't wait! I've missed you guys.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
April 17th - Catch Up Day
I know you have been working hard this week. We are going to slow the pace today.
Your assignment today is to finish any assignments you didn't get to this week. They were:
Math - Finish Lessons 1-3.
Reading - Finish Lessons 1-3.
Science - Finish Lesson 1.
Social Studies - Finish Lesson 1.
Now I know most of you finished Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday's
assignments. Way to go!!
Today, I want you to work on iReady Math for 45 minutes and iReady Reading for 45 minutes.
Then, choose a book from the Virtual Library, read it, and take an AR test on it.
Have a great day and stay safe!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
April 16th - Lesson 3
Math - I hope you are understanding Geometry and the vocabulary with the teaching videos. It's almost like you're back at school listening to me!! Yesterday was explaining what lines, line segments and rays are and how to identify them. Today, it is angles. An angle is 2 rays connected at an end point called the vertex. They are different types of angles based on its degrees. Watch the video to learn more. Then, there is another video that is a song. Sing along to learn and remember lines and angles. Next, complete the worksheet assignment to practice identifying angles. Finally, do questions #21-40 in the Math Schoolnet test. We don't want to forget what we have been learning all year!
Reading - We are still learning all about cause and effect in Reading. Watch the video explaining what cause and effect is. Then complete the worksheet. Next, in your Competitive Edge workbook, complete pages 37-41 for more practice on Cause and Effect. Finally, read 20 minutes and take an AR test.
Science - Tuesday and Wednesday you learned the parts of a plant. Today is a lesson on photosynthesis on a BrainPop video. If it asks you for a username and password, look at the Lesson sheets. After watching the video, stay on BrainPop to play the vocabulary, games, and other activities about photosynthesis. Finally, complete the worksheet for today's lesson.
Social Studies - How did you enjoy reading the Time For Kids online? I thought you would enjoy reading the magazine. If you didn't get a chance to finish yesterday, please finish the lesson today.
If you have any problems, call or text me! I'm here to help. Have a good day and stay safe!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
April 15th - Lesson 2
Math - Today we are breaking apart yesterday's video into segments. Click on the Math link Lesson 2 and watch the teaching video. Then, complete the 2 assignments. Make sure you do iReady Reading for 30 minutes today. I will be checking. (If you did not finish yesterday's Math, make sure you complete it today.)
Reading - Yesterday, you began learning about cause and effect. Remember, the cause is WHAT HAPPENED and the effect is the RESULT. There could be more than one result. For example, CAUSE - It's raining. The RESULT- I put my raincoat on OR I came inside to play OR I got my umbrella.
Today, watch the video lesson, then go to your Competitive Edge book and practice writing causes and effects. Second, complete the worksheet. Finally, read 20 minutes. Don't forget that you can go to the Virtual Library (Look in the LEARNING LINKS tab for the link to Warren County Schools.) You need to take 2-3 AR tests a week! (I know there was a lot of activities yesterday, finish Lesson 1 Reading if you didn't get a chance to finish.)
Science - Yesterday, I said you could complete part of Lesson 1 in Science. Pick up where you left off yesterday and finish Lesson 1. This week is about plants. Lesson 1 teaches about the parts of a plant.
Social Studies - Lesson 1 is about the Coronavirus. When you click on the link for Time For Kids Magazine, it takes you directly to the magazines. Click on the March 20, 2020 edition. Read the magazine. (You can use this as your 20 minutes of reading.) When you finish reading, write a summary of "Going Cashless". What does the article talk about? Pretend you are telling me about what you read. Write down what you would tell me. (It needs to be at LEAST 5 sentences or more!) Last, complete the quiz in your packet. You can go back and find the answers in the magazine.
Have a GREAT day. Call me if you have questions!!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
April 14th - Lesson 1
Math - Today you are learning what a point, line, ray, and angle are. Watch the lesson video and read the information from the copies of the math textbook pages I sent. Then, there is an assignment identifying these geometric terms. Finally, there is a multiple choice schoolnet test. Complete # 1-20.
Reading - Today's lesson is learning what cause and effect is and how to identify it. Watch the video explaining what it is, then go to BrainPop--watch the video there and play the games and activities. There is a worksheet to complete afterwards.
Then go to iReady Reading for 30 minutes. (I will be checking tomorrow to see that you did!) Don't forget to take Island of the Blue Dolphins test. Finally, read for 20 minutes.
Science - There are 4 activities to complete this week. I would suggest completing activity 1 today. It is introducing you to the parts of a plant. We will be looking at Plants this week.
Social Studies - This subject has 2 activities for this week. You could split Activity 1 up by reading the magazine today and complete writing a summary and taking the quiz tomorrow.
Packet 2 is different.
Math is a new unit on Geometry. I have included a video of teaching for each skill and written pages. Included are various ways for learn the material. I URGE each student to watch the teaching video and follow the assignments in order. Do NOT try to complete the assignments FIRST!
Reading consists of needed skills for student growth--Cause and Effect, Sequencing, and Compare/Contrast. These skills are difficult for 4th grade students. Videos are assigned to assist in helping students understand each skill. The assignments are also aimed at increasing students' reading comprehension and vocabulary. As with the Math lesson, DO NOT try to complete the assignments FIRST!
In addition, iReady Reading and Math are assignments that MUST be done. I will be checking to make sure students are using this program. Students are also required to read and take AR tests. Both of these things are included in the assignments.
Each day's lessons should take about 4 hours to complete. This is the recommendation from DPI for Home/Virtual Learning. Remember, these days count as a school day! It is NOT a vacation day.
Students should be completing lessons. THESE LESSONS ARE MANDATORY! They will be a part of the students' final grade.
If you have any questions or concerns, please text or call me. You have my cell number.
Stay safe!

Good afternoon Parents,
Vaughan has a virtual staff meeting and we have some new, exciting resources to assist in Virtual Schooling.
1. For those who did not pick up Packet 2, the school will be open tomorrow from 9:00-4:00 to pick up the packets. There are 5 students (who I will text to remind you to pick up packets) who do not have the next packet.
2. Beginning next week, we will have virtual sessions 3 days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for students to meet with me. We will discuss the assignments and I will help the students with problems they are having understanding the skills. I am trying to see which program--Google or Zoom will be the best platform. More information will be coming later this week.
3. On Monday and Friday, I will have call or text individual students who need one on one help.
4.Again, I will be checking iReady usage and AR tests by each student daily. Those who are not taking AR tests and working on the iReady subject if it is assigned that day will
be receiving a call from me.
5.Warren County and Vaughan are very serious that students continue to learn and grow. Parents must take a bigger role in making sure students are working at home. I am
here Monday-Friday (9:00-3:30) to help students. That is why we are beginning virtual meetings next week.
Stay Safe,
Mrs. Evans
PS - Don't forget to visit the class webpage daily. It will have updates in addition to the packet 2 page that you can easily click to go to the lesson videos. It is much easier than trying to type in the web address.

Good afternoon Parents,
I wanted to let you know that there are video lessons for each day of Math. It is a teacher teaching that day's skill. I know parents have their hands full working and trying to help their children. This videos should help with Geometry. I've spoken to several students and parents who were having trouble with the first lesson in Math. After seeing the video, the students understood and could complete the assignments. There are also math book pages that explain and give vocabulary definitions.
So I urge each student to watch the video for the Math lesson each day.
Have a good week and stay safe!

Dear Parents,
You guys rock!! When I talked with you, I heard how hard you were working with your child AND working at your jobs too! Thank you! We all have to deal with what is happening in our community and world. We want to do everything possible to get back to our normal day-to-day routine—including being back in school.
I miss my “children” SO MUCH! This is one of the best classes I have ever had! Every staff member at Vaughan have commented how well-behaved and motivated they are. They have grown into responsible young people this year. I want to finish out the year seeing this each day. I am so proud of the hard work and growth they have shown. I know you are too! I brag on them every chance I get.
Even though students are learning at a different level, it is important that they continue to improve their skills and grow. The first packet sent home continued this progress. In Math, students finished with the Fractions Unit 4th graders are required to know. In Reading, they read the novel, “Island of the Blue Dolphins” to improve reading skills and complete activities in vocabulary, cause and effect, sequencing, main idea and details, and conclusions. They also worked weekly on Social Studies learning about North Carolina through the Social Studies Weeklies and Science learning about Earth Science.
iReady-I checked regularly to see if students are working on skills. Many students are NOT! The requirements have changed. Instead of 45 minutes a week, it is NOW 30 MINUTES DAILY! I will continue to check. Parents will receive a text if students are not practicing their skills in iReady.
AR-I have been checking on who is reading and taking AR tests. This is another area that many students are not doing. At school, they were required to read a book and take/pass an AR test daily. I am not requiring a daily AR test, but I am looking for students taking and passing AT LEAST 3 AR tests a week.
The next three weeks’ daily assignments are attached.
We are going to be working on Geometry in Math. I have included a Parent’s Letter to assist you in helping your child. There are sheets with explanations and examples to help the student also. I have included links to assist in teaching the students each skill.
In Reading, we will continue to increase our vocabulary and work on specific reading skills.
In Social Studies, we will continue reading the North Carolina Weekly each week and completing the activities on the back page. I will also include online reading assignments to complete.
In Science, we will continue studying plants and animals with videos and writing activities.
For those of you who do not have internet at home, the School District is extending its internet to include the school parking lot. You can park and students can log on. The username and password to get past the block is username: [email protected] The password is 1Qwerty. (Don’t forget the period).
I am in the process on setting up a group text so I can communicate daily. Please continue to text or email me with any questions or concerns.
Stay safe and hope to see you soon!

Good Evening Parents!
I worked at school today. The lesson packet are ready for pick up tomorrow and Friday from 8:00-4:00 PM. Staff members will be there to pass them out. I would like at least the first 10 lessons from the packet you have now. That would be Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. I will take Lessons 11-15 and the extra iReady Math booklet (this booklet wasn't included in the lesson plans) if your child has finished. If not, keep Lessons 11-15 and the iReady Math booklet until they are complete.
It was good to be back at school. The only thing missing were my children. I walked into the classroom and it was a let down not to see their smiling faces!
I have posted the packet 2 information on the website (mrsevans125.weebly.com). Any questions, call or text me.
Don't forget to bring Lessons 1-10 from packet 1 with you when you pick up packet 2.
Stay safe,
Mrs. Evans

I posted some of this update on Class DoJo, but I added some more information.
Good afternoon Parents!
I am finishing up the next weeks of lesson plans and activities. I have included both paper copies and online activities. They will be available beginning April 1st at Vaughan. (This was according to the memo I received). The procedure will be the same as picking up the first packets. I do not know the times to pick them up. Mrs. Mizelle will probably send a connect-ed call with more information. I will include more information on the class website - mrsevans125.weebly.com - so check the site regularly during the week.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
I will post the assignments/activities on this site later tonight. It is easier to click on the links and not have to type them in. I will update the Social Studies' assignments with videos that support the North Carolina Weekly newspaper. When you get to those assignments, check for the links.
If you need any help or have any questions, please email, text, DoJo, or post in the Blog. I want you to have many ways to communicate with me.
Stay safe

Hello Parents,
This is week 3 of home/virtual learning. I hope you are all staying safe. I talked to all but one of you last week. I hope to set up a group text to reach out daily. If you are like me, I have my cell phone near me most of the time. A BIG thanks for helping your child with the packet sent home. They should be completing at least the first 10 lessons by this Friday.
You should have received calls from Mrs. Mizelle last night. The important points were students completing their packet, reading and taking AR tests, and going on iReady Reading and Math daily. (This is a change from the first 2 weeks where practicing on iReady was 45 minutes for each subject a week.) Now, Mrs. Mizelle would like for you to practice iReady 30 minutes a day and read for 20 minutes a day. The links for AR and the Virtual library are on the class website ( mrsevans125.weebly.com )
I working on a new packet this week. I don't have the information about pick-up days yet. WHEN YOU COME TO GET YOUR NEW PACKET, PLEASE BRING IN LESSONS 1-10 ASSIGNMENTS. If students have not finished assignments 11-15, they can work on them throughout the month of April.
Stay safe!
Mrs. Evans.
2019 - 2020 Class Goal
Our class goal is to motivate every student to strive to their fullest potential with student-based learning in a 21st century education classroom.
SCHOOL DAYS
School opens/Breakfast: 7:45 – 8:15
Class Begins: 8:15
Dismissal: 3:15
Please make every effort to have your child at school on time. Arriving late to class has your child trying to play catch-up all day! It may also mean additional homework. It is also important that your child remain at school the whole day. Picking a child up an hour early 5 times in a 6 week period equals a full day missed.
Please sign in at the office and obtain a Visitor's Pass before you come to the classroom. This is a policy to assist in protecting your child and others.
ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
We, at Vaughan Elementary School, believe that our faculty, staff, students, parents, and community must work together to make our school effective, thereby increasing student achievement.
